  1. Have you tried adding a cup of bleach to the wash?  If not try that and see if it helps.  What kind of washing detergent are you using?

  2. I find vinegar useful too. I've also heard that you can use Febreze along with your detergent...

  3. Try washing them with your regular detergent & a little bit of vinegar.

  4. Lynn is right - use the bleach (do not use a bargain bleach until you have the issue under control) in the wash water and the white vinegar in your dispenser as your fabric softener. The vinegar will actually provide a sunshine aroma when taken from the dryer.

And be sure to get those towels completely dry.  Remove them from the washer as soon as the last spin cycle stops and from the dryer when they are thoroughly dry.

What kind of detergent are you using and what is the water temp?  Have you done any brand switching to see if one product works better than another?

Where are the damp towels stored before you put them into the wash?

I used an open weave laundry bag (next to the washer) for all towels and wash cloths until I had a batch to wash...which in Florida doesn't take long at all.

Part of the problem my be they fact that the towels are already moldy when going into the wash. ?  Could that be the case? Best of luck on this one.  It can be frustrating.  Especially if the rest of the family is dropping the towels any place they choose.

  5. Mold is a natural by-product and using detergents that are not natural or organic will not clean the mold out.

Go to any health food store or Target Stores and buy Seventh Generation brand detergent. Wash the moldy item in warm water and helps to let is soak in the machine for about 15 min, then restart the washing machine to finish the cycle.

I live in SW Fl, and we use this brand all time.

  6. You might try some baking soda instead of vinegar.  I live in Texas and have the same problem in the summer.

  7. Try soaking the towels in Borax before washing.

  8. Use hot water only, for wash.  In addition to detergent, add 1 cup Clorox bleach and 1 cup Borax, and add 1 cup white vinegar to the rinse

Rinse on cold, and hang these towels on a line in the sunshine.

  9. bleach

  10. Try adding washing soda to the wash water.  You should be able to get it where you get your laundry detergent.  Arm and Hammer is the brand I see in our local stores.
