  1. Japan can be pretty expensive. Especially, living in big cities. Alot depends on where you want to live and how you want to live.

Also, unless you receive special permission from the Japanese (ie:working visa, etc.), it's going to be hard for you to just come and stay for a year without proving to the government that you have the financial means to support yourself. This means you're going to need to have quite abit of money in your bank account before you even get here.

Then, you'll have to pay not only rent (+ security deposit, etc.), but you most likely need a guarantor as well. Otherwise, most places won't rent to you. Realtors will want someone (prefereby Japanese) who they can trust and will be responsible for you.

Also, unless you eat practically nothing at all or cook for yourself all of the time. You are going to be spending alot on food. Probably way more than 280,000 yen. That's not even 76 yen a day and 76 yen might by you one onigiri.

You can say alot of money using public transportation or a bicycle or even walking. Using taxis would be and extremely expensive and probably a waste of your limited finacial resources. In a big city like Tokyo, there are lots of buses, subways, and trains. But, in the countryside, you're public transportation options would be limited. The figure that other person gave you is completely made up. Taxis are expensive, how expensive depends on how often you use them, when you use them and most importantly how far you travel. There's no way to say exactly how expensive it will be. This person is really just making up numbers and has no idea what they are talking about.

Finally , there is absolutely no way you can find a 3 bedroom apartment in Tokyo (or anywhere else in Japan) for 950 yen a month. Again, the person who said that has no idea what they are talking about. You'll be very lucky if you can find a single room in Tokyo for 50,000 yen. A 3 bedroom apartment will, depending on the location, probably cost you well over 100,000 yen/per month.

    Edit:

I just want to add this

    "Roughly, it's 2,062,800 ï¿¥ you'll spend a year in Japan. Seem high? It's not. It's about $191,000."

Not only is that person's knowledge of Japan pretty bad but their math skills seem to be lacking as well. 2,062,800 yen is nowhere near $191,000 US. Not even close. At the current yen/dollar rate that amount is only about  $18,900.

  2. Well, let's see...

A three bedroom apartment in Tokyo can range from 950ï¿¥ to 52,500 ï¿¥ (that's for a sweet 1 bedroom apt in Asakusa district). So, take the rent times 12, rent can range from 11,400ï¿¥ to 630,000ï¿¥/year.

Food, let's see I'll take what I normally spend monthly here and convert it to yen.  I spend around 280,800ï¿¥/yearly.

You'll probably buy clothes, which are expensive, so that's about 561,000ï¿¥ a year.

Paying for taxis is going to cost you, that's around 788,400ï¿¥/year.

A phone bill, internet bill, emergency costs, that's about 421,200 ï¿¥/year.

    Roughly, it's 2,062,800 ï¿¥ you'll spend a year in Japan.

Seem high? It's not. It's about $191,000.  But, there are things you will cut, like clothes you might not buy a lot of. You'll spend less on food if you are alone (I buy for three), you can take the subway instead of taxis, and you can go without a phone if you have internet. Or get internet on your phone.

Japan is a pretty expensive place. Get a roommate and cut your costs in half.

  3. Four million yen would give you a reasonably good standard of living. If you want to live on the margins you could get by on as little as 100000 a month if you lived in say a 60000 yen a month four mat room in a gaijin house and ate mostly cup ramen-but what would be the point?

  4. 500 thousand its more expensive there than here

  5. it really depends on where you are planning to live.

if you are thinking of living in kyushu its really cheap specially here in miyazaki.

rent here is atleast 300 dollars a month

food is atleast 200 dollars a month

and there are some apartment here that cost 500 dollars a month and you dont have to pay for you electric bill and water bill.

    hope i helped you
