Liverpool FC’s summer transfers (Part 1)
Liverpool seemed serious about getting themselves back in contention for a place in the Champions League after finishing a disappointing 6th place last season. Backed by their new owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the Reds manager, Kenny Dalglish and Sporting
Director, Damien Comolli set about the rebuilding process.
Their first signing of was the first of many English talents, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jordan-Henderson-c19102.
Signed from Sunderland for a fee which is reportedly around the 16-million mark, many have questioned whether the, as yet unproven, youngster would live up to the hype surrounding his move.
After a mixed pre-season, Henderson has really impressed in the opening few matches of the English Premier League season. Playing in a number of positions, yet thriving in the centre of the park, the dormer Sunderland man has earned the praise of his manager
and the media alike.
Add in the fact that the player also has his first goal for his new team in the bag, a wonderfully taken goal against Bolton last weekend and it seems that if things go as they are, he might just be a very shrewd piece of business.
Liverpool went quiet for a few weeks when it came to transfer activity, yet when they got into it, they did not seem to hold back as they signed Charlie Adam and Alexander Doni in quick succession.
Charlie Adam
Seen as a bit of a risk by many, given the players age and the label of being a ‘big fish in a small pond’ at Blackpool, there were doubts as to whether the
Scotsman would be able to hold down a place in the Liverpool side. Especially with the crowded midfield at the time.
However, Adam seemed to settle right into the side and quickly made the Red’s midfield his own. With a number of commanding performances, including a dominating show against Bolton where he passed the ball all over the park with elegance and ease, Adam showed
that he could play in ‘any pond’ he was thrown into.
Scoring his first goal in pre-season and following it up with a superb drive in the aforementioned match against Bolton, Adam seems like a bargain and a promising acquisition.
Alexander Doni
With http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pepe-Reina-c29672 seemingly able to play almost every match and play them exceptionally well it seems that the back up goalkeeper position at the club is a bit of a vacation.
Keepers such as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Charles-c8808 Idtanje and Brad Jones have all moved on after failing to emerge from the Spaniard’s shadow.
However, Doni is different, as he brings in experience as opposed to promise; something the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 side have not had in the back up keeper position.
Signed from AS http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Doni-c11553 was not the superstar signing everyone was expecting, but no one could deny that it was something the Reds needed: solid cover for Reina.
Even with these signings Liverpool still had not solved their defensive problems and they still did not have a back up striker or an out and out winger. Yet, it seemed that for once at least, the ‘people in charge’ realised this and did not hesitate to back
the manager.
