Liverpool Looking to Rise Against Northampton with a League Cup Win – Part 1
‘The Reds’ are looking to put their recent Premier league defeat against the ‘Red Devils’ at Manchester United’s home Old Trafford behind them and are looking to score a victory against Northampton.
The next Carling Cup match is at Anfield against a League two club, Northampton.
Liverpool did fight back from a score of nil to two and made it back to an even two to two, with Steven Gerrard scoring both goals for ‘The Reds’ against Manchester United.
Liverpool did ultimately loose the match with a score of three to two when Dimitar Berbatov scored a hat-trick in the match. This has been a first Manchester United hat-trick against Liverpool since 1946.
Berbatov was in top form and definitely dazzled the crowds with his impressive goal scoring abilities.
Fernando Torres was stopped every time he would even try to make an attempt at the goal and four yellow cards were given out by referee Howard Webb to the ‘Red Devils’. Some may even call it foul play, because every time Fernando Torres even got a chance
to score he was always stopped by unfair means.
Still both goals scored by Steven Gerrard were made after a foul had taken place. One goal was from a penalty kick and the other was from a free kick.
Northampton have come from a three to one loss from another league two club Shrewsbury Town. Northampton has taken several points in their starting seven league matches and is currently ranked seventeenth in their division.
Liverpool is ranked fifteenth in line in the English Premier League race and hope to rise above their division two competitors.
Liverpool has been given the chance to play at their home ground and they achieved this chance when they knocked out Reading on penalties. After playing the whole ninety minutes, the game finished on a score of three to three, after which the match went
on to penalties and Liverpool scored two goals and did not let any in, to end the game with a score of two to nil.
As the Premier League teams that are in the European competitions are not coming into the Carling Cup till the third round, this is ‘The Reds’ first match of the season in the Carling Cup and is a competition that Liverpool has won several times.
It is only Aston Villa with a five match winning streak that even come close to levelling with Liverpool’s record in this tournament.
Recently the League Cup has become a place to give youngsters a chance and allow extreme players a chance to let it all out. It's even where injured players are released back into the game. Though this is only the case at the start of the competition as
in the latter part of the tournament the bug guns are always taken out.
A lot is expected from Roy Hodgson right now, especially as Liverpool will be playing at his own home ground and with a club that is actually six nine places below them in English football.
Liverpool is expected to make a full eleven change and most don’t expect to see any of the first team members who played against the ‘Red Devils’ last week.
Brad Jones got signed with Liverpool this season and it is expected that he will make his ‘Reds’ debut in this match.
The young defenders Stephen Darby and Martin Kelly are both hoping to become a part of this match as Martin Kelly has already proved his worth from his game play in the five Europa League games that he has played thus far.
