Liverpool News – Fernando Torres to be out for 3 weeks owing to an adductor injury
Fernando Torres came on as a late substitute in the World Cup final. He looked well, before he pulled up an injury while sprinting towards the ball. Liverpool fans and squad were concerned about the striker’s condition but scans have confirmed that it was a minor adductor tear. He is therefore likely to be up and running in a short span of three weeks, and Liverpool is hoping to get the striker ready for their opening fixture of the Premier League against Arsenal. The match is to be played on 15th of August, and Liverpool will want to win as they host Arsenal at Anfield.
Peter Brukner, who heads the club’s sport and science department, stated that initially it was considered to be a mild adductor tear and the doctors at Spain considered it to be a minor concern. The player however underwent a MRI scan and it was confirmed as a small tear. He added that Torres is expected to train within two weeks and play with four weeks. Torres was seen withering in pain as he chased the ball in the dying moments of his national side’s historic World Cup final win over the Netherlands. Spain recorded its first ever World Cup and cemented their names in history as being only the third side to be European and World Champions at the same time.
The striker however has had a difficult year, both for his club and country. He had a season filled with frustrating injuries, which limited his appearances in the league to 22 to a potential 38. He had to undergo a persistent groin problem, followed by two knee operations in the span of just 4 months. He scored 18 goals in 22 appearances, which makes him the highest scorer for his club. He however failed to impress in the World Cup, after failing to score even once. He played 6 out of 7 matches in World Cup, and never looked like the lethal force he is famous for. He lacked concentration and sharpness in the field, which led him to make a complete nonsense of golden opportunities to score. Before the World Cup, Torres was linked to a big cash move away from Liverpool, but his fitness may have caused the speculation to die down.
Liverpool has hired a new coach in the form of Roy Hodgson, following the departure of Rafa Benitez. The coach was delighted with the striker, after he was seen wearing a Liverpool scarf while celebrating his national side’s World Cup triumph. The manager admitted that the action lifted the clubs downed spirits. Liverpool had 4 of their members playing in the final, with Reina and Torres for Spain, and Kuyt and Babel for the Dutch.
The manager was vocal about the matter, stating that he took pride, being the Liverpool manager, in having two World Cup champions in his squad. He was also happy that he had four World Cup finalists in the squad, and expected the younger players to learn from them. He stated that one team had to loose, and had sympathies for the Dutch. He however congratulated Goalkeeper Pepe Reina and Torres for their contributions to the side. He claimed that winning the World Cup is undoubtedly the highest honour for any football player in international football, and it was evident from the celebrations. He pointed out that the picture of Torres wearing the scarf was motivational for the fans and squad, but was proud with everyone who played in the 19th edition of the historic tournament. He underlined the fact that having four international players in the squad is a huge achievement and relishes the opportunity to work with them. The current players are to train hard in Switzerland, where they prepare for the pre-season campaign. Liverpool host Arsenal in their opening match of the season, which is to be held on 15th of August.
