Suarez’s double secures emphatic win for the Reds
Liverpool overcame a nervous start against Wigan Athletic to record a commanding 3-0 win at Anfield on Saturday.
The victory stretched the Reds recent unbeaten streak to seven matches now.
After getting off to a sluggish start, which saw them struggle to penetrate inside the Latics box, Brendan Rodgers’ troops soon took over the driver’s seat after a poor defensive error from the visiting team just after the halftime break.
Raheem Sterling picked up a horrible pass from Beausejour inside the opposition’s half, darted forward from the right flank evading http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Figueroa-c13730 in the process, before cutting a pass inside the 12 yards box for team-mate, Luis Suarez. And for a man who had already
notched up 8 league goals in the season, it was easy pickings as he calmly dispatched the ball into the back of the net with his first touch to put the hosts ahead.
From there, Wigan never looked settled. The determination and fighting spirit that they showed in the first period seemed to have deserted them after the break, as Liverpool charged forward frequently, asking questions of their defence.
Although the second goal appeared to be on the cards, it required a brilliant piece of individual effort from Jose Enrique before actually coming to fruition. The Spaniard made a sparkling run from close to the half-line, outpacing the Latics defender before
releasing a remarkable through ball for Suarez. With the striker unleashed one-on-one with the goalkeeper, he comprehensively beat the charging Al Habsi, striking the ball into the bottom right corner.
From there on, it was all about damage control for the visitors, as the Reds started to look more confident and seemed to enjoy their time on the field. And they only had to wait for eight more minutes before Enrique seal the affair by tucking the ball inside
an empty goal. A good one-two between Sterling and Suarez allowed the former to take a shy at the Wigan goal from a rather acute angle. Al Habsi’s deflected effort fell at the feet of the Spaniard, who was never going to miss the target from such a close range.
Things could have gone far worse for the Latics as Liverpool continued to pound their goal with shots. However, somehow, they managed to keep the scoresheet at 3-0, allowing the Reds their third clean sheet of the season so far.
The win was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809’s second of the campaign at home, and only the third in the competition. They now occupy the eleventh slot in the league standings and find themselves eight points adrift of fourth-ranked West Bromwich Albion.
On the other hand, the defeat was Wigan’s seventh of the season and pushed them down to 16th in the table. It was also the first time in 6 games that the Reds were able to record a win over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 Martinez’s unit. Earlier in March, Wigan grabbed
a surprise 2-1 win over Liverpool in a league match at Anfield.
