Liverpool and Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva confident about future at Anfield
Lucas Leiva, the 24-year old Liverpool midfielder, said he believed he had the quality and class to remain in the first squad for the Reds in the upcoming seasons.
The Brazilian international insisted he had proved himself under new boss, Kenny Dalglish, this season, despite the clubs various problems, and hoped to continue on with them.
Lucas said while speaking to reporters, “I think every single season is a different season. I don't think I would sign a new contract if the club did not have a plan for me in the future. I am happy with the way I am playing. A lot of players have come already
and I am still here and playing so that means they believe in my football and my qualities”.
Lucas arrived at Anfield from Brazilian side Gremio for a fee of £5 million in the summer of 2007 when Rafael Benitez was in charge of the club. He made a few starts against big sides like Arsenal and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 but failed to make the impact he was expected
to make. He went on to make 32 appearances in all competitions and scored a single goal in the FA Cup competition.
The next season was particularly disappointing for Lucas. The Brazilian fell out of favour with the supporters and was even booed after drawing against Fulham in the Premier League.
However, it should be noted that Lucas was competing with the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Javier-Mascherano-c18071, for a place in the Reds midfield.
Having been in that situation before, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lucas-c22528 is all too familiar with having to fight for his place in the starting squad. The Brazilian revealed he was aware current boss, Dalglish, would be bringing in new signings in the upcoming summer transfer window,
but was confident he would be able to retain his place after impressing this season.
The Brazilian central midfielder admitted he would have to earn his place in the starting line-up but was confident he had the ability to do so. He continued, “Next season we will see what happens. They will sign players, of course, but I think I have shown
I am capable of being in the team all the time. I have to finish well and keep that up next season, improve and fight for my place”.
While his goal tally is not too impressive, having scored just one goal this season in 43 appearances for Liverpool, the midfielder has been exceptional overall. Into his fourth season at Anfield, Lucas has made a total of 164 appearances and scored 6 goals.
He recently signed a long-term contract with the Reds and expects to stay at the club in the upcoming seasons.
