Liverpool appoint Damien Comolli as director of football strategy
Liverpool have appointed Damien Comolli as their director of football strategy and he will join the club with immediate effect.
The former Tottenham director of football was sacked by the club in October 2008 and the Frenchman spent three years at White Hart Lane.
Since then, Comolli returned to France and worked with St Etienne as their sporting director.
The 38-year-old will now work alongside the new owner John W Henry and manager Roy Hodgson.
Comolli said, "I am delighted to be joining Liverpool and look forward to working with John and Roy."
The new director of football strategy will help Hodgson to recruit new players and to set up a system whereby they can uncover talented young players. "I think we all realise there is a big job ahead, but we all share the vision that John has for rebuilding
the club and bringing back the success that the supporters deserve," said Comolli.
Comolli will also help in putting together a structure to improve player development.
Liverpool manager Hodgson was positive about the recruitment of the former Tottenham director and said, "We are engaged in an exciting project here and he will bring a lot to the table. We all want to see moves to strengthen the squad and support player
development over the next few years.”
Henry also believes that Comolli can help Liverpool as they attempt to improve on the squad and talent at the club. "Damien has a proven track-record of identifying exciting young football talent and we are delighted that he has agreed to join Liverpool.”
The new owner’s New England Sports Venture group, who bought Liverpool for £300 million, believes that the experienced director will work well with the Liverpool manager.
"Working closely with Roy Hodgson and the coaching staff, I know he will make a valuable contribution to strengthening the club and the squad as we move forward,” said Henry.
