Liverpool beat Manchester United 3-1 in English Premier League match
In a match that ended with a score line of three goals to one at the end in favour of the home side, Liverpool dominated Manchester United to blow the title race wide open. The encounter started with both Liverpool and Manchester United playing with a traditional 4-4-2 line up. The first 45 minutes of the match started with Liverpool on the front foot as they pressured the Manchester United defence again and again. Liverpool’s main threat in the first half was their star striker Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan forward, who was signed by the Reds in the January transfer window for £23 million, manufactured Liverpool’s first goal of the match.
Chris Smalling misjudged a long ball which fell in the feet of Suarez. The speedy front man worked his way past three Manchester United defenders inside their own penalty area before passing the ball to Dirk Kuyt who duly applied the finishing touch to give his team a one-goal advantage in the 34th minute of the match. Liverpool’s second goal came soon after, but this time it was Luis Nani’s petulance which gifted the home side a two-goal advantage.
Luis Nani tried to clear lofted ball with his header, but mistimed his jump prompting the ball to fall straight to Dirk Kuyt who got his second goal of the match from a very close distance into Van Der Sar’s net. Shortly after Liverpool’s second goal, the match threatened to turn into a brawl. Jamie Carragher’s two-footed challenge on Luis Nani added fuel to the fire as the Portuguese winger reacted to the challenge with extravagant protests. As a result, the referee had to separate both the players as a fight almost broke out at Anfield. In the aftermath of the incident, the match official booked Carragher as Nani was carried off the field with in a stretcher.
Soon afterwards, Rafael da Silva’s tackle on Martin Skrtel caused further controversy at Anfield. This time, Liverpool called on the referee to show a red card to the young Brazilian full back but Phil Dowd only brandished a yellow for Manchester United’s right back. Manchester United pushed onwards for a consolation goal, which came in the last minute of the match through Javier Hernandez’s header. However, it was too little too late for the Red Devils as the match came to a close with the score line at 3-1 to Liverpool.
