Goals from Dirk Kuyt and Luis Suarez enabled Liverpool to collect three points against Sunderland and keep their hopes of European football alive.
Liverpool are placed 6th in the Premier League after taking 45 points from 30 games. On the other hand, Sunderland are not too far behind with 38 points.
Reds manager Kenny Dalglish made several changes to the side that defeated League leaders Manchester United recently. Influential captain http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international is out with a groin injury and is expected to
be back in April 2011.
Meanwhile, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce made just one solitary change to the starting line-up which drew 0-0 against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Danny-Welbeck-c10233 in central midfield.
Liverpool’s first chance to open the scoring came when the new signing Andy Carroll rose highest to meet a corner. The ball dropped for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dirk-Kuyt-c11348 and the Dutchman’s shot was goal bound but a brilliant save from Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet prevented
the midfielder from scoring.
Black Cats manager Steve Bruce was put in a spot of bother when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lee-Cattermole-c21868 and Steed Malbranque respectively.
Sunderland felt hard done by when just after the half hour mark Liverpool were awarded a penalty. Black Cats defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jay-Spearing-c18106 near the penalty box but it was dubious that the challenge was in or out of the area. Despite protests from
Sunderland players, Referee Kevin Friend pointed to the spot. Dirk Kuyt then successfully converted the spot kick to put his side 1-0 ahead.
In the 37th minute Liverpool striker Suarez was on the end of a defence-splitting pass and the Uruguayan’s first time volley forced a fantastic saved from the Sunderland goalkeeper.
Sunderland enjoyed majority of the possession in the first half but failed to make it count. Liverpool goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pepe-Reina-c29672 was a mere spectator and was not required to make even a single save.
In the second half, the Reds kept up the pressure. At one stage, Andy Carroll’s header looked goal bound but Cattermole’s off the line clearance denied him. In the 77th minute, Suarez doubled the advantage for his side. The striker unleashed a
shot from an acute angle to beat the goalkeeper at his near post.
To make matter matters worse for Sunderland, Mensah was sent off after collecting a second yellow card.
Liverpool travel to Hawthorns to take on West Bromwich Albion on 2 April, 2011 whereas Sunderland make a trip to Manchester to face Manchester City the same day.
