Liverpool boss says Fernando Torres' return to form crucial to climbing up table
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson says that the need for Fernando Torres returning to form is vital to his side’s chances of climbing up the English Premier League table.
The Reds are currently mired in the relegation zone following a poor start to the season which seen them claim just nine points from their opening nine games.
However, Hodgson is banking on Torres — who netted the winner against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, 24 October — to make a return to form.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup winner is struggling for form and fitness this season, having only scored two goals in the league. Those strikes, however, have led to the club’s only two victories in the competition this term, highlighting his importance to the cause.
Hodgson told his club’s official website that he hopes the Spaniard can use his goal against Blackburn as a springboard for a strong scoring run.
He said that: "I think his desire and his wanting to do a good job have been there from the very first day. It is just a combination of things — maybe the team is playing a bit better and their extra confidence is giving him extra confidence."
'Good players have to be in good form'
"Football is always a big amalgam of a lot of factors. You do need, if you are going to have a good team, your good players in good form producing what they are capable of producing. With Fernando on Sunday we definitely saw that. I see it in training every
day and I just hope he keeps going and we have a good few months of it."
Liverpool will next take on Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium on Sunday, 31 October. A win could see them move out of the bottom three of the league and into the top half of the table.
