Liverpool boss says Steven Gerrard is eager to make swift return
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson says that his captain Steven Gerrard is eager to make a swift recovery from his injury.
The 30-year-old tore his hamstring during England's 2-1 friendly loss to France at Wembley on Wednesday 17 November and had initially been ruled out for four weeks.
However, the central midfielder is working hard with physiotherapists in an attempt to help the injury heal more quickly and make his return for the Reds as soon as possible.
Hodgson told the Daily Mail: “He's straight into it and anxious to get back as quickly as possible.
“He's not letting any dust settle, but it's important we make sure he is fully recovered. We don't want to bring him back too soon and risk losing him for a big chunk of the season.”
Gerrard's absence could hardly have come at a more difficult time for Liverpool, they are struggling in the English Premier League after a poor start to the season. They are currently sitting in ninth place in the table, six points behind Manchester City,
who are occupying the last of the UEFA Champions league qualification spots.
Hodgson has also been struggling for options to fill the starting berths in midfield as youngster Jay Spearing is also injured and Lucas Leiva was suspended after being sent off in the 2-0 loss to Stoke City on 13 November.
Gerrard has played a key role in all of Liverpool's successes over the last few years. He helped them to claim the UEFA Champions League title in 2005 and helped them to reach the final again two years later.
He has also lifted two FA Cups, two Football League Cups, the UEFA Cup and two UEFA Super Cups.
Gerrard has made 12 appearances for the club across all competitions this season and has scored seven goals.
