Liverpool boss tips Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres to keep excelling

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson hopes that Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will continue to shine for the English Premier League club.

After the club endured their worst start to any league campaign for 57 years, a string of good performances have lifted the Reds into the top 10 of the table and Gerrard and Torres have been vital to the resurgence.

England international Gerrard has been pulling the strings in the club’s midfield for years and produced another match-winning performance when he came off the bench to score three goals in the UEFA Europa League clash against Napoli.

2010 FIFA World Cup winner Torres, meanwhile, has recovered from a poor start to the season to score important goals for the club, including a double against league leaders Chelsea in a 2-0 win and the equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic on Wednesday,
10 November — a goal which was set up by Gerrard.

In fact, except for David Ngog’s strike against Arsenal in the first league game of the season, Gerrard and Torres have either scored or set up all of the side’s goals this season, underlining their importance to the cause.
'We need Gerrard and Torres firing on all cylinders'

Hodgson has tipped the duo to keep up their good work. He told reporters that: "If we are going to do well this season we need those two firing on all cylinders, we need Torres' goals and Gerrard's manipulation and control of the midfield.

"We only saw it in glimpses against Wigan whereas against Chelsea and in our previous victories against Napoli, Blackburn and Bolton it was present in much larger doses."

Meanwhile, the former Fulham boss is hoping to strengthen his squad when the transfer window reopens for business in January.

He said that: "Where we are badly off is if something goes badly wrong at the back, where we don't have a lot of players to cover. Up front if Fernando or David Ngog are not able to play we don't have options in terms of out-and-out centre-forwards. Those are
a couple of areas where we need to look for help in the January transfer window."
