Liverpool boss upset to face Manchester United in third round of FA Cup
Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson says it is “unfortunate” that his side will meet Manchester United at such an early stage of the FA Cup this season.
The English Premier League clubs were drawn to face each other at Old Trafford on the weekend of 8-9 January. It is the first time the fierce rivals have met in the competition since 2006, and their match is the only all-EPL tie among the 32 third-round
games.
The game will mark the ninth post-war encounter between the clubs in the FA Cup, and United have won seven of the last eight cup clashes.
With such a rich history between the two clubs, Hodgson claims that it is “sad” they are meeting in the third round rather than a later stage of the competition.
He told reporters, “It will be an excellent game of football, but it’s a bit unfortunate that two Premier League teams of the quality of Manchester United and Liverpool get drawn together in the third round. I always feel that’s a bit sad.
“It’ll be a cracking game of football. No doubt we’ll find ourselves on TV again. We seem to be on TV every week, so I better get my make-up ready.”
United have won the trophy on more occasions than any other club, with 11 triumphs to their name ― the most recent of which was in 2004. Liverpool, meanwhile, have lifted the trophy on seven occasions, with the last win occuring in 2006. The clubs have also
won the joint most English league titles, with 18 apiece.
Each club will be desperate to claim bragging rights after their cup clash, but United have a huge advantage over Liverpool in the EPL as they are currently sitting in top spot ― 12 points clear of their Anfield rivals.
