Liverpool http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Steven-Gerrard-c34196 not considering retirement, eyes success next season
Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard revealed he was not yet ready to retire from football and felt he could still contribute to both club and country.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international missed the better part of last season due to a groin injury, because of which he could only manage 24 appearances for the Reds in all competitions.
That compared to his usual 40 plus appearances for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 was a great disappointment for the club and the player himself.
However, Gerrard does not think he is close to retirement, claiming there were still a few good years left in him.
Gerrard said while speaking to reporters:
“I always look at the 35 [years of age] marker.
If I get there and I'm still involved with Liverpool I'll be delighted, but at the moment I'm feeling as good as ever.”
He maintained that he had returned to full fitness and was eagerly waiting for the new season, to lead his side to trophies.
The last time Liverpool won any silverware was way back in 2006, when they won the FA Cup. With almost five years gone by, the supporters are getting impatient.
Not only that, Liverpool finished sixth on the English Premier League table last season, which means they failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League.
Despite the recent disappointment, the Liverpool midfielder remained optimistic about his future with the club, Gerrard continued:
“I'd like to finish my career with a few more trophies.
I've had time to get my body right, get my body strong.
I'm still four or five weeks away from playing a game but I believe I'll come back in better physical condition than I've ever been.”
Gerrard began his senior career with Liverpool in the 1998-1999 season, and has been with the club until now.
The central midfielder is considered to be one of the best players in the world; he has made a http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Total-c40747 of 556 appearances for the Reds and has scored 140 goals.
Liverpool begin the new season with a clash against Sunderland at Anfield, after which they travel to the Emirates to take on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429.
The Reds will be aware that they cannot afford to drop points early on if they wish to emerge as title contenders towards the end of the season.
