Liverpool captain and managing director pleased with High Court ruling
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has said that New England Sports Ventures' (NESV) takeover of the club will help his team get back on track in the coming weeks.
Gerrard spoke to the press after the High Court ruled against current owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks' attempt to block the £300million sale of the club to NESV.
"It's a fantastic result and credit needs to go to [Liverpool's managing director] Christian [Purslow], [commercial director] Ian [Ayre] and the chairman [Martin Broughton] who have worked so hard on this," the 30-year-old told the club's official website.
Purslow said that the takeover by NESV will secure the club's finances for the next decade as it seeks their first league trophy since 1990.
"This is a great day for the club and will hopefully allow Liverpool to concentrate on football for the next ten years," he told the Guardian.
Focus will now be on the pitch
Gerrard added that the team, who are currently 18th in the league with only six points from seven games, should follow up the court decision by performing on the pitch. Liverpool face Everton in a hotly-contested Merseyside Derby this weekend.
"It seems things are nearly sorted off the pitch so we need to start getting them right on it by getting three points at Goodison on Sunday."
Roy Hodgson, who took charge of Liverpool this summer, has had a torrid start to his Liverpool reign.
Like most of Liverpool's players, Gerrard asked the fans for patience as the club seeks stability, on the pitch and off it.
"I know how frustrated the fans have been with what has been going on and I can understand their feelings. But we've all suffered in this, especially the supporters, and now it's time for us all to pull together and help move the club forward."
