Liverpool chief says club will not panic buy in January

Liverpool's director of football strategy Damien Comolli says that the English Premier League club will not be pressured into spending needlessly on new players when the transfer window reopens for business in January.

The Anfield side endured their worst start to a league campaign in 57 years and found themselves mired in the relegation zone. While they have managed to begin picking up wins, they are still only in 11th place in the table, six points behind Manchester City,
who currently occupy the last of the four UEFA Champions League qualification places.

Despite their poor start to the season, Comolli insists that the club will not be forced to shell out in a bid to stop the rot even if results fail to pick up again.

The 38-year-old told reporters, "If we feel it is the wrong market or players are overpriced, then we will wait. I'm not going to say we won't do anything in January, because that is not the idea at the moment. We have a pretty good idea of what we would like
to do and we have identified targets."

Comolli, who joined Liverpool after the club were taken over by John Henry and Tom Werner in October, added that if the opportunity to bring in a world-class player arose, there would be funds in place to bring in such a top talent.

"John and Tom want to win and you win with top players. The big thing is making sure the academy produces players for the first team. The club's not in a bad state. We've had some great results.
"It's not in ruins. Everything is there to be successful. We have to win and bring back trophies. For a club this size, it's not about top-six or top-four, we must win everything that's winnable."
