Liverpool club is in crisis
Liverpool Legend's Mark Lawrenson has revealed his belief that Liverpool FC is in a ‘crisis’.
The club has endured a dismal start to the season, which has seen them win just one of their English Premier League games so far, to pick up just six points.
After a 2-1 defeat by league newcomers Blackpool, they are currently mired in the relegation zone. Liverpool was dumped out of the Carling Cup by Football League Two side Northampton Town.
In his column for the Liverpool Daily Post, former player Lawrenson, who enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at the club during the 1980s, has expressed his fear over Liverpool’s future.
Officially time to worry
"I really didn't think Liverpool, even in these trying times, would plummet to these depths. I really thought that a game against Blackpool at home would be the perfect chance to get things back on an even keel and I imagine most supporters saw it that way
too. So for them [Blackpool] to come to Anfield and win comfortably and outplay a Liverpool side lacking so much in desire means it is officially time to worry. It's officially a crisis."
The problems are even worse off the field. The Reds have been on the market since April, when George Gillett and Tom Hicks put the club up for sale. No buyer has been forthcoming, and Liverpool owes £350m to various creditors. They are at risk of falling
under control of the Royal Bank of Scotland if they cannot agree on the restructuring of a loan payment (of £67m), which is due on Wednesday, October 6.
Lawrenson added that the debts meant that the club was not able to invest in any top talent to turn around their fortunes.
"It's not like you can sign a couple of players to turn things round any more. Which is a shame, because the new players here aren't doing it and some of the old players aren't up to it. It's clear that Liverpool have been relying on their top stars for
too long, and now the mediocrity in the squad is being exposed."
