Liverpool confirm Fernando Torres injury
Liverpool FC have announced that Spanish striker Fernando Torres did indeed receive an ankle injury in the team's 2-0 loss to Stoke on Saturday 13 November.
A statement on the team's official website read:
"Fernando Torres sustained an ankle ligament strain during Saturday's clash with Stoke City – but the striker will still join up with the Spain squad for their international with Portugal. The Reds' medical team have been in contact with their Spanish counterparts
to keep them up to date on the 26-year-old's condition. Torres will have the injury further assessed by the Spanish medical staff ahead of the friendly in Lisbon on Wednesday."
"We missed Fernando in the second half after the kick he took," Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson told reporters after the game. "He didn't want to come off and I didn't want to take him off because you don't want to take your goalscorer off when you need a
goal. But I don't think he was firing on all cylinders."
Despite the injury Torres played through the pain and remained on the field for the full 90 minutes.
"I don't think it's too serious," Hodgson added. "It was a nasty knock he took but he wanted to carry on. We offered him the chance to come off but he wasn't interested in that."
It is unclear whether or not Torres will be fully fit for Liverpool's upcoming match against West Ham on Saturday 20 November, or whether or not Vicente Del Bosque actually plans to call on his services in midweek in the battle of Iberia.
Despite their most recent loss to Stoke, Liverpool had begun to finally turn around their dismal start to the season. They currently sit in mid-table with 16 points from 13 games. Torres has had a difficult year after a lackluster performance at the World
Cup during the summer and has scored five goals in the league for Liverpool so far this season.
