Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has insisted that his team's hopes of European qualification next year are still alive, despite the Reds 2-1 loss to West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns in the Premier League on Saturday.
Liverpool have to finish in fifth place to qualify for the UEFA Europa League. The berth is currently occupied by Tottenham Hotspur, who are five points ahead of Liverpool and also have a game in hand.
Carragher said that the Merseyside club’s loss to the West Midlands club over the weekend will not matter in determining Liverpool’s position at the end of the season. He added that Spurs also played out a draw against Wigan Athletic and that the Reds would
catch up on their Premier League counterparts.
The defender told the club's official website in an interview, “I don’t think losing the extra point here with that late goal will make or break how we finish the end of the season. We have still got a bit of catching up to do on Tottenham, they only drew."
The veteran admitted that there have been a lot of instances this season when Liverpool have been put out of contention for Europe but they have always comeback stronger than ever.
He said that Liverpool’s home draw against Wigan and an away loss to West Ham also generated a lot of criticism but the following games proved the quality of the side.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international added, “There have been plenty of times this season when we thought European qualification had gone. Wigan at home, West Ham away. But then you get a couple of good results after those and you think it’s back on.”
The 33-year old also underlined the importance of Liverpool’s next Premier League fixture against Manchester City at Anfield. The central defender insisted that that would be the perfect occasion to bounce back from last week’s defeat and regain their confidence.
He revealed that the fixture is a crucial one for the club and remained hopeful for a victory against the Citizens, who are flying high after a 5-0 thrashing of Sunderland at the City of Manchester Stadium on Sunday.
