Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel believes the Reds can catch Tottenham Hotspur – EPL news
Liverpool centre-back Martin Skrtel feels that the Reds have the strength and quality to overtake fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the Barclays Premier League.
Martin Skrtel told Liverpool’s official website, “Tottenham dropped two precious points and I am happy that we are closing the gap on them.”
Liverpool are currently placed sixth in the Premier League with 45 points to their credit out of 30 games and are only 4 points behind Tottenham Hotspur but Spurs have a game in hand.
The Slovakian defender thinks that recent results had a huge impact on the club’s standings in the Premier League table. Tottenham Hotspur endured a goalless draw and failed to earn all three points against West Ham United recently.
On the other hand, Kenny Dalglish’s men put up an impressive performance against Sunderland at Anfield and defeated the Black Cats 2-0. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 right back into the hunt for the Champions League spot.
However, Liverpool’s win over Sunderland came under controversial circumstances, as the Reds were given a lucky penalty when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jay-Spearing-c18106 was fouled right outside the penalty box but the match official decided to award a spot kick to the home side. Dirk
Kuyt stepped up to take the penalty and the Dutchman managed to find the net to give Liverpool an advantage.
Martin Skrtel, who was a part of the Liverpool team against Sunderland, admitted that the penalty decision was controversial but claimed that the Reds deserved to win against Steve Bruce’s men.
Skrtel added, “I guess we fully deserved this result. We were the better team and we were dominant. It was a controversial penalty for some but this is football. They didn't have a clear chance so it is a fair result.”
Liverpool will play their next match against West Bromwich Albion and a win for the Reds will take them within the touching distance of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. It will also keep their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the next
season alive.
