The fallen English Premier League giants have reportedly set their sights on luring the Belgian ace to Anfield in the upcoming January transfer window.
Reports in Dutch and English media indicate that Liverpool are taking keen interest in signing PSV Eindhoven winger, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dries-Mertens-c11679, in the upcoming winter transfer market.
The 25-year-old attacking prodigy has been staging scintillating shows since arriving at Philips Stadion in the summer of 2011 after making over 50 league appearances for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Utrecht-c39237.
Reports suggest that the Reds boss, Brendon Rodgers, is a keen admirer of the prolific winger, and sees him as a perfect addition to his squad.
Liverpool are currently struggling to perform in the highest echelons of English football. Occupying the 14th spot on the league table, the Reds have only managed to win one of their six league games thus far. In addition, their front-line has
thus far struggled to perform brightly, one of the main reasons behind their poor start to the 2012/13 campaign.
Mertens, who has thus far netted 25 goals while providing a bagful of assists in 40 league appearances for PSV, has been in tremendous form this term, and has shown that he can not only create goalscoring opportunity, but he can also hit the back of the
net.
Netting four goals while setting up six more in seven Eredivisie games, the Belgian ace can surely fill the void at Anfield.
A source close to the 25-year-old was quoted as saying to goal.com:
“Liverpool first wanted Mertens when Kenny Dalglish was manager but they are still making their interest well known. He would obviously love to play for such a prestigious club in English football but right now he can only focus on producing strong performances
for PSV”.
Apart from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809, reports indicate that several other clubs are also interested in luring the talented winger away from Philips Stadion in the upcoming January transfer window.
The Belgian international has an ongoing contract at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/PSV-c40281 that runs until the summer of 2016. Although, the Boeren have made it clear that they will not let go of their prized asset in the near future, an offer in the region of 12 million Euros could tempt
the club management to cash in on their star player.
