Liverpool fans stabbed ahead of Europa League clash
Two Liverpool fans have been stabbed in Naples ahead of their Europa League clash tonight against Napoli.
Reports say fighting took place between two sets of supporters near the Forcella district, with a 53-year old man from Liverpool and a 27-year old man from Blackpool suffering knife wounds and receiving treatment in hospital.
A third man was also wounded in a separate clash, but the 44-year old from Liverpool refused to get treatment.
Another incident involved British tourists being mistaken for Liverpool fans attacked by youths who threw stones at them at a restaurant.
A British consulate spokesman said: “We have had reports of various incidents across the city and three people have been stabbed. Two Liverpool supporters suffered knife wounds and will be kept in hospital for a few days and probably miss the match.
“Another supporter was also stabbed but he discharged himself because he wanted to go to the match. Three other fans suffered minor injuries after being assaulted and we are working with police to keep an eye on things.”
Manchester United fans on their visits to Italy in the Champions League against Roma in 2007 and the final against Barcelona in 2009 have also suffered stabbings, while Liverpool, Arsenal and Middlesbrough fans have also been attacked when travelling to Italy.
