Liverpool fortunes may finally change after court approves sale
During the 80’s Liverpool ruled English Football just like Manchester United did after the introduction of the English Premier League but these days Liverpool is on the other side of the table.
The Mersey side team is fighting for survival after being left in the bottom three. Fortunes have taken a U-turn for Liverpool, which is the most successful club of Britain with five Champions’ League crowns.
With only six points from their first seven games, Liverpool is in eighteenth position, two years back they had reached the final of Champions league.
Financial problems have caused Liverpool’s decline, as co-owners, Geroge Gillet and Tom Hicks, continue to hang on to their money and don’t spend on star signings. But Liverpool fans may finally get rid of the American owners as there is a strong possibility
of a new potential takeover, which will help in balancing their debts.
But Liverpool’s present owners have been hanging on to make sure that this sale doesn’t go through and have tried to remove influential members of the board. Their efforts may finally go in vain as a High Court has ruled in favour of the club, leaving the
American owners without any more weapons to stop the sale. The court has given its verdict that it is the right of Liverpool to consider bids.
The matter which could have been solved outside the court was finally fought inside it because Liverpool board members thought that the American co-owners forced the termination of influential members, who were willing to hear offers.
Liverpool last week was on the brink of agreeing to a deal with New England Sports Ventures (NESV), who also owns the Boston Red Sox team as well. The deal is believed to be around three hundred million pounds, which will help in clearing Liverpool’s debts
of two hundred million pounds before the bank deadline of 15th October.
Justice Floyd clearly mentioned is his summing up that the two owners George Gillet and Tom Hicks have been found guilty of breaching the rules as they have tried to forcefully sack the board members and they are not empowered to do anything illegal.
The possible takeover will mean that Liverpool manager, Roy Hodgson, will have money available for January Transfer window. He can make some big money signings to revive the fortunes of the club, but, that is if, Roy himself doesn’t get sacked which is very
highly likely.
Roy Hodgson has failed miserably to lift the team after the departure of his predecessor Rafael Benitez.
Under Benitez Liverpool went on to beat AC Milan in the Champions League final in 2005, which was played in Istanbul. But Benitez is also one of the reasons behind Liverpool’s awful present position as it was his pathetic signings, which failed to make any
impact at Anfield.
Not only this, he signed players, who were not the future of Liverpool. They all played for two or three seasons consistently but they were never Liverpool type players, namely, Ryan Babbel, Fabio Aurelio, Lucas etc.
His decision to allow Xabi Alonso to join Real Madrid also hurt Liverpool badly as he was the one, who was holding the strings of Liverpool’s attack. After his departure Liverpool missed his sublime through balls and assists. There is big void still to be
filled and Liverpool need to buy a quality play maker.
New manager, Roy Hodgson’s most important test will be his ability to hold on to skipper, Steven Gerrard, and, star striker, Fernando Torres in the next transfer window.
