Liverpool keeper desperate for squad to be strengthened
Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina says that he is eager for the English Premier League club to strengthen their squad and remain capable of competing for honours so as to avoid losing their top players.
The Reds — a side who regularly qualify for UEFA Champions League football — are currently lying in ninth place in the EPL table as they continue to recover from their worst start to any league campaign in 57 years.
They also missed out on playing in Europe's elite club competition this term after finishing in seventh place in the 2009-10 campaign, and instead are taking part in the UEFA Europa League.
While Reina claims that it is still possible for Roy Hodgson's men to finish in the top four and return to the Champions League next season, he says it is vital for the club to bring in new faces when the transfer window opens for business and push for success
if they are to keep hold of players such as Fernando Torres.
He told ESPNsoccernet: "We have to finish this season in a better position than we are at the moment and make sure we build for the next years and try to be competitive. If not, it's going to be difficult for them to keep these kind of players. We are not
probably as strong as Man City, Arsenal, Man United, Chelsea and Tottenham can be so that's why we have to make sure we build a better squad.
“At the moment, it's almost impossible to compete for nine months against Chelsea, for example, and that is what I want. The clubs all around England are building proper squads. We have to do the same and we have to be able to compete.”
The 2010 FIFA World Cup winner also called for supporters to get behind Hodgson as he continues to stamp his own brand of football on the Liverpool squad.
