Liverpool legend backs Fernando Torres to shine against Manchester United
Kenny Dalglish has backed Liverpool striker Fernando Torres to prove his doubters wrong with a strong performance against bitter rivals Manchester United when the sides square off in the English Premier League on Sunday.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup-winning forward has come in for criticism after failing to perform at a level anywhere near his best against Birmingham City last weekend as Liverpool managed to escape with a point in a goalless draw.
Former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp described Torres’ performance in the game as “diabolical”, but Dalglish, who helped the Reds to six league titles as a player and three as manager, has backed the Spaniard to show his talent against the Red Devils.
'Bad day at the office'
He told TalkSport that: "It might have been a bad day at the office for Fernando but he's a really good guy, he’s a real quality player and I'm sure he'll be looking forward already to Manchester United on Sunday. He's not got a bad record there."
Dalglish, who is currently working at Liverpool’s youth academy, defended Torres’ display in the Birmingham match, claiming that his exertions at the World Cup in South Africa and the fact that he is still making recovering from injury as possible reasons for his poor showing.
He said that: “I don't think Fernando would think it was one of his better games but certainly he came as close as anybody in the Liverpool team to scoring a goal. He's been through a lot, he had a lot of injuries last year and even in the World Cup final he was injured. He's come back this year and I think he's only played two or three games but he scored one against West Brom. He might have a bad day but he's not a bad player. There's no one anywhere who wouldn't have him in the side.”
