Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson apologises to Rafael Benitez
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has apologised to Inter Milan's coach Rafael Benitez after he criticised the Spaniard’s dealings in the transfer market.
"If I upset him by saying something which I didn't mean to be critical then I'd happily apologise. There was never any intention to do that," said Hodgson.
Hodgson and Benitez exchanged verbal blows when the Liverpool manager commented that the “expensive failures” he inherited was the fault of Benitez.
Benitez spent six years at Anfield, but failed to guide the team into the Champions League in his final year and had a fractious relationship with the board and former owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.
Benitez, the new Inter Milan manager has retaliated to Hodgson’s comments and advised that the Liverpool manager concentrated on his own job rather than on his transfers. He also added that Hodgson didn’t
know what he was talking about.
However, the Liverpool manager has now tried to calm the situation between the two managers.
The new Liverpool manager has had a tough start to his career at Anfield and his team are only in 13th place after 10 games in the Premier League.
Hodgson was not given a huge amount of transfer funds before the club was taken over and has lost Argentine midfielder Javier Mascherano. The former Fulham manager is eager to bring in new players to replace
some of Benitez’s signings.
Hodgson now seems to have ended the spat between the two managers with his apology and wants to move on from the incident.
"As far as I am concerned I work at Liverpool and do my best for Liverpool and he will work at Inter and do his best for Inter," he said.
"I have no comments to make about other people's opinions. I'll allow them to make them and in this case I'll accept them if that's what they want," added Hodgson.
