Liverpool play rich and Chelsea pay the price – English Premier League debate
Liverpool began their summer by spending a ridiculous amount of money, £16 million, to buy http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jordan-Henderson-c19102, the 21-year-old England under-21 international.
The former Sunderland midfielder began his career at the Stadium of Light, with a short loan spell to championship side Coventry City.
He has made just a single appearance for the England national team, a friendly against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 in November of last year.
While he did earn a selected for the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 under-21 squad set to participate in the 2011 European championship, Henderson did not impress.
In fact, the Reds midfielder was arguably the worst player for the England under-21 team when they took on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ukraine-c3032 on Wednesday.
The midfielder, who is said to replace Liverpool skipper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Steven-Gerrard-c34196, was invisible during the entire match.
The hype created about the youngster and the astronomical transfer fee paid by Liverpool to secure his services has damaged the transfer market for other clubs.
For example, English Premier League giants Manchester United and Chelsea are chasing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric.
The 25-year-old Croatian international has surprisingly turned out to be the most sought after player in this summers transfer window after his amazing performances for the Spurs last season.
The Blues were the first to make a bid for Modric; it was revealed Chelsea had offered Tottenham the sum of £22 million for the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Croatia-c2879 international.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp was outraged with the amount offered and rightly so, considering that players much younger and much less experienced than Modric were fetching transfer fee’s almost equivalent to his.
The Spurs boss rejected http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786’s bid and said while speaking to reporters:
“But if there has been a bid of £22 million, that is ridiculous. There are people being sold for £20m who are not fit to lace Luka's boots.”
He was of course referring to the sale of Henderson to Liverpool, which was for an estimated £20 million, later said to be £16 million.
If a player like Henderson can be sold in the £16-20 million, then how much would someone like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857 fetch? Our guess is something along the lines of £35-40 million.
This is not the first time http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 have bought players for more than their worth, having started in the January transfer window.
The Reds bought Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez for £22.8 million, which is acceptable and former Newcastle striker Andy Carroll for a whooping £35 million.
An average striker and a less than average overall player, Carroll has a terrible discipline record on and off the pitch.
The 22-year-old England international is in no way worth the money Liverpool paid for him out of desperation, having lost http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 to Chelsea on the deadline day of the winter transfer window.
Liverpool seem to have started a pattern of over-spending on players, which is taking its toll on Chelsea and other Premier League clubs.
Modric is not the only Chelsea target Liverpool have jeopardized, with the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sergio-c33030 Aguero and Neymar also demanding a higher transfer fee than both of them deserve.
Admittedly, Chelsea have money to spend, but that does not mean they should be spending on players who are not worth it.
Atletico Madrid striker Aguero is only 22-years-old and while he has proved himself in international football, he is yet to do so in the English Premier League.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brazil-c2858 national team, he has a lot to learn.
Chelsea would be better off not to indulge in such frivolous spendings and focus instead on other quality players.
