Liverpool predecessor regrets selling the club

There has been a surprising statement by the former Liverpool owner David Mores when he admitted that he ‘hugely regrets selling the club’ to George Gillett and Tom Hicks. More over, the former occupant of Anfield told the media that the present owners need to “accept their role in the club’s current demise

The club saw a major distraction in the past year with the issue of ownership. It is right for Mores to finally admit this that he made a mistake by selling Anfield to them. He was trying to find owners with a stronger financial backbone but couldn’t.

Rafael Benitez and his squad have constantly criticized the ownership indirectly and only when their interests were safeguarded, did they back off a bit. In a recent statement, Mores while referring to Gillet and Hicks said, “I call upon them to stand back, accept their role in the club's current demise, and stand aside with dignity.”

After a torn campaign, Liverpool finished at the 7th position in the end, disqualifying themselves from the Champions League. Players along with Benitez were planning to make their move from the club but he is now assured that his stakes are safe. Benitez complained about having low amounts of funds to run the club and as it turns out, his demands are being met as they bid in to sign Villarreal’s Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi.

The 23-year-old has a €14 million on him along with Albert Riera going for the other team. Manchester City along with Italian clubs AC Milan and Juventus are interested on bidding on him too.

But there is some bad news for the club too; there are players that are likely to leave the Reds. The Liverpool defender Fabio Aurelio is one of them. It’s official that the talks are over and Aurelio will be leaving. The Brazilian has had a chain of injuries and has spent most of his season on the bench.

Benitez offered him an extension contract per match because of his injuries but he disapproved it.

In an official statement Benitez said, “Fabio’s contract is nearly finished and he is going to leave us. We had been trying to work something out with regards an extension but it was a pity that we couldn’t.”

On the injury issue he said, “He has given us absolutely fantastic service. The one problem we had with Fabio was that he suffered too many injuries and it was such a pity because he has great quality.”

Further complimenting the star he said, “Fabio is a top professional, a great player and a really good lad. It has been a pleasure having him here and we really will miss him. You are talking about an amazing person who gave 100% all the time. We wish him all the best.”

The list of unhappy players doesn’t end here. There were rumours of Javier Mascherano and Yossi Benayoun being unsatisfied with the club. Well now, Chelsea has made a bid on the duo as well. It so happens that the Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti wants to sign in new players before the contracts of Michael Ballack and Joe Cole expires.

There was an unofficial bid for Mascherano from Barcelona but things for him have not cleared out as yet. On the other hand, Benayoun said, “Ancelotti wants me for next season and now everything depends on Liverpool.” But then he added, “Chelsea will have to pay some £6 million but I believe that in the end I'll be moving there.”

That’s not all. The Reds star striker Fernando Torres is also on verge of moving, even though his agent claims that it is not the case. Currently, bids worth £50 million have been stacked up by Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City. There are also advances on the Anfield loyal Steven Gerrard by Jose Mourinho. His bids are rising to £80 million but the player has made no statements as yet. The stars won’t be able to compete in the Champions League next season and it certainly would make them think twice.

Martin Broughton, the man in charge of the sale of Liverpool who is the Chairman of the club should certainly setup the progress for the sale of the club if he truly has the interest of Anfield and Kop at heart.
