http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 have reportedly turned down Chelsea’s audacious £40 million bid, believed to be a British record, for striker Fernando Torres. Liverpool insist the star striker is not for sale.
The Blues made the offer for the 26-year-old Spanish international striker late Thursday evening to bolster their forward line at Stamford Bridge in the second half of the season.
However, Liverpool quickly responded to confirm that Torres will not be leaving Anfield.
"Chelsea have made a bid for Fernando which has been turned down," a Liverpool spokesman said. "The player is not for sale."
Chelsea were linked with a swoop for Torres last summer after Liverpool missed out on the Champions League following a disappointing seventh-place finish in the Premier League. But the player returned from winning the World Cup with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011, pledging his commitment
to the club.
However, following a poor start to the campaign under Roy Hodgson, it was widely suggested that Torres was not happy at Liverpool and would be looking for an exit this January or in the summer.
Kenny Dalglish has since taken charge at Anfield, following Hodgson's sacking earlier this month, and Torres has looked a much-improved player with three goals in his last four outings which suggests that he remains fully committed to the Reds.
It is believed that Torres is keen to move to Stamford Bridge and is likely to hand in a transfer request soon. He has reportedly agreed a five-year 150,000 a week wages deal with the Premier League champions.
It is not known if Chelsea will make an improved bid, but Liverpool's new owners, Fenway Sports Group, are determined to bring success at Merseyside, hence keen to keep a player of Torres' quality on board.
