Liverpool utilizing all that they have got
The recent situation of the Liverpool Football Club has led the command of Anfield to learn that spending money when necessary is important. Near the start of the 2007 season, Liverpool used a lot of its resources to bid and sign in players while most other clubs were at a standstill and conserving money. The new owners however Tom Hicks and George Gillett had plans only they could understand.
Even after spending so much and signing so many players the club was unable to obtain any coveted silverware and in the end head to head back home in misery. They did enter into the Champions League final that year but were defeated By AC Milan. Now Liverpool is in a debt of more than 350 million pounds and they do not have enough money to buy players.
The reason behind Rafael Benitez and most of the players that have either left the club or are preparing to do so is because the club is in a severe financial crisis that cannot be overcome anytime soon unless the club is bought by a new owner. Moreover, to add to the concerns, the Chairman Martin Broughton has told that it might actually take a year to find new owners for the club.
With appointment of the mastermind, behind Fulham’s magical campaign to the Europa Cup final, Englishman Roy Hodgson as manager at Anfield things are looking a bit up. They have signed in Serbian Milan Jovanovic, the star from World Cup and have already handed him their number 10 jersey. With players like Argentinean Javier Mascherano and Spanish Fernando Torres the club will have to make deals carefully and utilize acutely on their needs.
There are bids being made on Liverpool players from all over the place and Hodgson has now told that he will have to strategise and rethink over how much the squad needs to be rebuilt. Hodgson is right now facing a shortage of players. He has just replied in negative to a loan transfer of David Ngog to West Brom.
The French forward is in demand by Roberto di Matteo, who himself is in desperate need of a good striker. He is not the only underdog of the team that has been bid on; Palermo has also made an attempt to obtain Liverpool’s midfielder Lucas Leiva. The Italian club has offered about 3 million pounds but the Reds have demanded at least 8 million pounds.
However there is some good news for Liverpool too. They have theoretically beaten Manchester United to bid for the ace of Standard Liege, Steven Defour. The midfielder has been highly sought for and is on the negotiating stage with Hodgson. The 22 year old Belgian will prove to be a fine addition to the squad, told Hodgson. He also stated that he was a fan of his style of play and hoped that if he comes to Anfield he will prosper.
The Manchester United’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson earlier sent the player a note of interest when he picked up a serious injury and was out of play from September till January.
It seems that Defour is more likely to join the Reds rather the arch rivals the Red Devils. Hodgson is currently rebuilding his squad quite intelligently with a mix of new and veteran players that have a similar style of play. This year he will be introducing some new home bred players too.
Not that long ago a law was passed that obliged football clubs to have at least 6 inbred players from their home so that footballing talent can rise at a faster level from England. Hodgson will definitely make some interesting choices this season.
The legendary Liverpool player Kenny Dalgish who is in charge of the Liverpool Football academy will work along with Hodgson to bring up these new players.
