Liverpool wait to hear if late Carlton Cole bid succeeds
Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has reportedly targeted Carlton Cole as the forward that he wants to sign before the closure of the transfer window this evening.
West Ham striker Cole, 26, is keen on a move to Anfield, and there have been suggestions that Liverpool could send Dutch forward Ryan Babel in the opposite direction to link up with the Hammers. However, some sources close to the club have claimed that Babel will be staying at Anfield and that any deal for Cole would be cash-only.
Other reports however, had even gone as far as to claim that Babel was on his way to London in a helicopter, but with Tottenham Hotspur also keen on the Dutchman, Harry Redknapp’s interest could see the deal for Cole collapse.
Liverpool’s club doctor is believed to be in the capital ready to conduct medical tests on Cole should any offer be accepted by West Ham.
Hodgson’s claim that Liverpool were looking to sign a forward in the final hours of the window has set the rumour mill spinning today, with as many as 10 names all linked with a move to the Reds.
It now appears as though former Chelsea forward Cole – who has seven caps for England – has moved to the top of the list, but with time running out to complete a deal, Hodgson and Liverpool could be beaten by the clock.
UPDATE: Liverpool have made a bid of around £9million for Cole, although Tottenham have made a bid of £10million for Babel. Both deals could now hinge on West Ham bringing in a replacement for Cole. Talk about a merry-go-round!
