Liverpool's Danny Wilson hopes to use League Cup as stepping stone
Liverpool defender Danny Wilson is hoping to use the League Cup as a stepping stone towards securing a regular starting place in the English premier League club’s first-team.
The 18-year-old, who moved to Anfield in the summer from the Rangers (Scottish Premier League champions), is hoping to be involved when the Reds take on Northampton Town in the competition tomorrow night.
Wilson used the Rangers’ run to the Scottish League Cup to establish himself in the first-team and formed a formidable partnership with club captain David Weir.
The Scotland Under-21 international told Liverpool’s official website that he hoped manager Roy Hodgson would give him a chance in the cup competition to try and emulate his successes of the last term.
'Great atmosphere'
He said that, “To start a game for the first time would be special and I just hope the manager thinks I am ready. If not I will work even harder to try and make it happen. I was an unused substitute against Rabotnicki in our first home game of the season
and the crowd were buzzing and there was a great atmosphere, so to play for the first time is something I am really looking forward to.”
Although he would love to play a part in helping Liverpool to a visit to Wembley in the final, he insisted that Northampton would not be easy opponents.
He said that, “We have just got to take it one step at a time. There are no easy ties as cup football is a one off. Sometimes it's tough playing against a team from a lower league because this is their cup final and they are out to impress, and you know
they will put everything into the game. They will be up for it and we have to make sure we play well and win the game.”
