Liverpool defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jamie-Carragher-c17728 has claimed that stuttering Premier League holders Chelsea will be forgiven for their dismal form this season if they can somehow manage to win the Champions League crown.
The Blues are currently in fourth place in the Barclays Premier League. Although Chelsea were at one point leading the table by five points, a string of terrible results throughout the month of December saw them surrender that lead, and slip into fifth place
in the standings. The Blues have not been able to recover from that downward spiral.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 recently saw their already wafer thin hopes of retaining the title vanish completely after a 1-1 draw against Stoke City. That result allowed leaders Manchester United to increase the distance between the two sides to 11 points, a gap that seems
impossible to overcome with just seven games remaining in the season.
However, Carragher believes that even though the Blues might not be able to retain their domestic crown, they could still save their season by winning the Champions League.
Speaking on the matter, the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international said, “That (Chelsea’s current position in the League) isn't enough for (owner) Roman Abramovich but if Chelsea happen to win the Champions League, nobody will remember their final league position. We played
poorly in 2005 but that never gets mentioned as we won the Champions League. It masked everything."

He added, "This Chelsea team are running out of chances to win the prize they want more than anything, which is why they will throw everything into these games."
However, if Chelsea are to harbour any hopes of winning the coveted prize, they must first overcome arch-rivals Manchester United in the quarter-finals of the competition. The two sides will go head-to-head in the first leg at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday,
6th April, and such is the quality of both teams that Jamie Carragher is hard pressed to predict the winner.
The defender concluded, “This is almost too hard to call but I just think United will snatch an away goal and that could prove to be the difference.”
