Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher hopes Fernando Torres will stay
English International Jamie Carragher has stated that he is anticipating Fernando Torres to stay with the Merseyside for the 2010/11 season. Carragher informed the media that the Spanish striker has informed Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson that he will play for Anfield. However, the footballer further commented that it was about time that Torres announces this himself officially.
Carragher has expressed that Liverpool fans have focused their attention on the coveted striker to inquire if Torres will confirm his stay to play for Liverpool alongside their captain Steven Gerrard. Earlier, Steven Gerrard ended his saga of departing to the Bernabeu to play for Real Madrid after he was assured that the new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is making the right decisions for the club. Another major reason for his stay was the signing of Chelsea’s departed Joe Cole. He, along with some clever signings from the former Fulham manager made other players stay loyal to the Kop.
Carragher has admitted that he is pretty happy with the way things are moving for the Scousers and hopes the Liverpudlians will perform better in the next season. He did emphasize that Fernando Torres’s presence will play a pivotal role in the 2010/11 season along with Joe Cole and Gerrard.
Early in the summers, it was speculated that Red’s skipper Steven Gerrard was making a move to Real Madrid. The offer from Jose Mourinho is still alive who had an eye for the star since his stay at the EPL. He has been trying to complete his dream team at the Bernabeu but so far has been miserably unsuccessful.
Gerrard relived “You’ll never walk alone” motto when he confirmed that he will be staying loyal to the Reds. The Reds had an extremely disappointing last season. Their performance was tarnished because of injuries, bad luck and poor performances. Gerrard has vowed that the team will rejuvenate this season and turn their 7th position finish last year into history. He has however admitted that the presence of a talented team would be essential for that.
Earlier in the summers, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City were all looking forward to sign Fernando Torres but after a horrible 2010 World Cup in South Africa, every team was forced to rethink their decision. The Spanish striker has however defended himself by saying that he was injured in the World Cup.
After the World Cup, Real Madrid and Barcelona backed out their bids but both Chelsea and Manchester City are still in the race. The bids that started from 50 million pounds have gone up to 70 million pounds which would make the transfer an English record.
Torres ahs instigated that he is unhappy with the clubs performance and the lack of funds which handicap the club from signing in world class players. But that’s not all. El Nino has also informed that he has issues with his past dealings related to the club. Nevertheless he has confirmed his confidence in Hodgson and has appreciated his work.
While talking to the media, Carragher has said, “Well, (Gerrard is) our best player. For me he's probably the best player in the history of the club, alongside Kenny (Dalglish), so it's obviously going to give everyone a massive lift (that Gerrard has decided to stay).
He continued, “Hopefully Fernando will do the same and we can bring one or two more in so that we head into the season with a real feel-good factor”.
Carragher also mentioned his excitement to play along with Cole. He mentioned that Joe Cole had settled in to the club well and is expected to star and help in bring the major turnaround in the club’s performance.
While speaking about Cole, he stated, “He's not taken too long to settle in and he knows quite a lot of the lads from England. He's a good lad too and he's staying right in the centre of Liverpool, so a lot of the fans have seen him around”. He added, “He loves playing here and being at Liverpool. You like people to get involved with the city and he's doing that from an early stage”.
