Liverpool's Steven Gerrard - The unluckiest footballer ever?
Is there a player who has done so much for his team without achieving so little? One doesn’t have to think too hard to come to the conclusion that only Steven Gerrard is that one player.
The Whiston born, Liverpool skipper made his first team debut for his beloved Liverpool in 1998/99 season. He hasn’t looked back since and has been the backbone of the club in the past decade.
He almost left the club in 2005 and then in 2006. However, his loyalty with the club overpowered his desire to win more trophies with other clubs. Steven Gerrard is one player who epitomises the never say die attitude. His passion for the game is second
to none and no one on earth can dare challenge his determination and desire to win matches.
Love for the game is in his blood and with the exceptional talent that this man possesses, one would expect him to have won loads of trophies. Unfortunately that is not the case.
Unfortunately for him, he has been the only star of his team for most part of the decade. Players playing alongside him could never match his ability or vision. The players around him failed to match his talents and some miserably failed to play at the same
frequency as him.
Fernando Torres is one player who has finally been able to develop a strong partnership with the Liverpool legend. Other notable mentions are Micheal Owen and Xabi Alonso.
Where is my club heading to? is the question he must be asking himself, having taking the title race down to the wire two seasons ago, what is that has gone so miserably wrong?
Liverpool look in total shambles under Roy Hodgson, they seem to be going backwards at quite some pace. Steven Gerrard, who will be 31 by the end of this season, must be wondering why on earth he stuck with his beloved Liverpool five years ago.
He deserves a lot more than just a solitary Champions League medal. The great Pele suggested in 2006 that Brazil needed a Steven Gerrard to become unbeatable. He is by far the most complete midfielder and some suggest that the comparison with Frank Lampard
is an unfair one.
Lampard only became a top performer after he had world class players around him. Taking nothing away from him, he hasn’t won Chelsea games totally on his own. He plays brilliantly in the system that Chelsea plays and they also have a settled bunch of players.
Imagine a Steven Gerrard in Chelsea shirt, he’ll be ripping teams apart week in week out. Once he had two quality players in Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso around him, he took his team to a 2nd place finish in the Premier League and their highest
point tally ever.
It’s hard to find a player who can shoot like him, head like him, tackle like him and win you games on his own time and time again. He is the only player to have scored a goal in the final of all cup competitions.
Roy Hodgson's tactics of playing utterly dreadful football are so apparent that one wonders what is going through the minds of these great players. Leaving Torres on his own to battle like Bobby Zamora shows how inept he is at handling big players.
Gerrard is too loyal and professional to speak out against his manager but Liverpool's performances this season have been so dire that it would hurt him more than anyone else. He is a man whose time is running out and if he wants to win the Premier League
with Liverpool, he might just need to voice his opinion this time around.
A new regime which recognises Steven Gerrard as an integral part of the furniture at Liverpool would consider the sentiments of the Liverpool skipper with great concern.
One has to feel sorry for this man, he has given his heart and soul for this club but no one has been able to match his ambitions. Hopefully, for his and the fans' sake, NESV can realise this and show ambition and put this club back to where it belongs i.e.
top of the English football. Steven Gerrard would surely hate to end his career with the tag of “the unluckiest footballer ever”.
