Downing became Liverpool’s most expensive signing of the current summer transfer window when the Reds paid a hefty £20 million to bring the English winger to Anfield from Aston Villa.
The 27-year-old winger made his Premier League debut for Liverpool and played the entire 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Sunderland at Anfield on Saturday.
Downing is being considered a vital member of the squad for the ongoing 2011/12 season and the English winger is confident that his performances at Liverpool will help him secure a starting berth with the Three Lions.
