Living Legends' Best XI's....?

Back in May 1996, The Cricketer magazine celebrated its 75th birthday by asking a 'living legend' from each Test playing nation to pick their best XI from The Cricketer's period (1921-1996)

Richie Benaud had the honour of choosing the Australian team.

The eleven he picked was:

Arthur Morris; Mark Taylor; Don Bradman (captain); Neil Harvey; Greg Chappell; Keith Miller; Ray Lindwall; Don Tallon (wicketkeeper); Shane Warne; Dennis Lillee; Bill O'Reilly. Alan Davidson was twelth man.

12 years on, what changes, if any, would you make to this team?

Only look at players who have represented Australia since 1921.

  1. Matthew Hayden to replace Mark Taylor

Glenn McGrath to replace Ray Lindwall

Ricky Ponting to replace Neil Harvey

Adam Gilchirst to replace Don Tallon

    Team

    Hayden

    Morris

    Bradman (c)

    Ponting

    Chappell

    Miller

    Gilchrist (wk)

    Warne

    Lillie

    O'Reilly

    McGrath

    12th man- Lindwall

  2. What a team! My only changes would be Slater in for Taylor and surely Gilchrist has to be not only the best OZ keeper-batsman but the greatest keeper-batsman in the history of Test cricket.

  3. oohhh i like this one!!

    Hayden in for Taylor

Gilchrist in for Tallon (batting record got him there, otherwise i would have said Healy)

Ponting in for Bradman (now before you starting reacting, I'M JOKING!!but Ponting in for Harvey)

McGrath in for O'Reilly (mainly cos i think Warne would be capable of handling spin duties on his own and a pace attack of McGrath, Lindwall, Miller and Lillee is going to scare the living be-jesus out of any side they would come up againist, then to have Warne come on and bowl into their scuffmarks....that side aint gonna lose a lot of games!)

  4. any room for Jeff Thompson  ?

  5. Dear Oracle,

    Good question.

I would replace Lillee for Brett Lee. I feel Lee may equal Lillee in accuracy but has more pace. I think Bill O'Reilly really cannot be replaced (even though Warne's in the side). Gilchrist for Tallon. And although, I dislike Ponting, I would replace Arthur Morris with Ponting
