This question are for those have have lived/worked abroad for at least 2 years. Has your national (I'm Canadian, so I have OHIP - Ontario Health Insurance Plan) ever expired while abroad. Mine has and I am planning on staying an additional year here in Germany. How can I go about extending my already approved absence with my health insurance?

  1. I have met similiar problem before, here is the information that I feel helpful..http://health-insurance.expert-tip.info/...

  2. Contact OHIP directly.  There are times that with the proper documents (eg letter from your employer or school) the health card can be extended without you being present.  (coded on the OHIP computer to show later expiry date)

That is something dependent on your situation though.  (eg vacation has a 2 year per lifetime limit, working has 5 years terms, school is unlimited etc)

Btw...I am sure you know this part...but make sure your private insurance is also extended....OHIP has limited coverage for people outside of Ontario-even for reasons such as school.
