Question:

Living and doing business in South america?

I am a small entrepreneur and am considering moving to either Chile or Uruguay.

Which one has a better business climate for someone like myself? Which is generally more business-friendly and stable?

Does one have a significantly higher living standard than the other? Is one of them a lot easier to immigrate to?

Just answer as many as you can, you don't have to be able to answer all.

Thanks.

  1. I would say Chile as the stronger economy and is more stable of the 2. When ARgentina's economy collapsed in 2001, Uruguay suffered the consequences because of the close nit business between the two countries.

If you want to learn more about both countries, there are websites you could visit that will tell you about moving and lving there. Here are 2 sites.

  2. If I were you, Chile. Just for the fact that worldwide it is better assessed economically speaking and therefore you would have more business oportunities there.

  3. Chile, no question. You have the larger population and a very good banking system with a stable government.

The people are most gracious and you may be somewhat taken aback by the almost European flavor of the cities. The locals will work with your speaking English and welcome any investment you might bring to their country. Here I mean to say, you will understand what is going on around you in the business world.

Present exchange rate is great, you can stay at the very high end hotels for $140-180 USD a night. The comfortable and very nice for $45 USD per.

It is a great place to live, have fun.

  4. chile is quite livable and safe and the financial climate is good.  santiago is one of the nicest cities in south america, and the people are generally pro-U.S. decent environment for small business, better than uruguay.  chile, like peru, has substantial trade with the pacific rim nations.

uruguay has both a curse and blessing in being wedged between argentina and brazil.  montevideo is a great city, relatively safe and prosperous, and has one of the biggest ports in the world.  outside of montevideo though, the country gets a bit sketchy.  it has some chaotic districts where gringos are advised to steer clear.  there is actually an islamic militant group living in the jungle on the border of brazil and uruguay.

i believe montevideo and santiago are ranked 1 and 2 among the most livable cities in south america, so it depends more on personal preference.  chile is a predominantly mestizo nation (like mexico), whereas uruguay has a large population of non-mixed euros, mainly german, italian and spanish.
