Question:

Living at home or her independence

One of my best friends, Tara, is also 19 years old and truly wants her independence from her parents. She is currently living at home because she is going to a community college close to her house. Sometimes she says that she just wants to get away, even if it means skipping some college semesters. It worries me when she says stuff like that, I don't want her to stop her life just to gain her independence. I've been over to her house a lot and there isn't anything truly wrong with her parents. Just the typical parents naggings and concerns, nothing out of the ordinary. We are very close so I know that there isn't anything weird or out of the ordinary going on. So is this normal to want this type of thing? Could she really be this unhappy living at home?

  1. she probably just thinks she's too old to live at home. if she hasn't given up or anything like that yet, then she probably wont.

  2. It may not be that she is so unhappy. It may be the fact that she is growing into adulthood and still living under her parents roof, their way.

Tell her she may be becoming more mature and wanting to be more independent but the schooling she is getting is far more important now than anything she may think she wants other than that. Once she is finished with school she can begin her career and her life and live it the way she wants to live it.

Remind her to respect her parents for all they have done and been to her.
