Hi everyone,

Just a quick question here. I recently graduated from university and i am now in a full time job, earning around a gross of £24,000 a year.

However i still live at home with my parents, and they are on housing benefit, claim council tax and also i believe on income support too.

Would I be liable to pay anything to the council directly, or would they deduct any amount from my parents benefits?

I read around that there's way to avoiding paying i.e. Claiming you live somewhere else and not at home, or saying you went off giving no forwarding address.

Please can i get advised the best options here.

  1. Your parents income support will be affected with you living at home (you'd be classed as non dependent and income would be taken into account) and as they get income support they will be getting council tax benefit in with their housing benefit and this would also be affected by a non dependent

Check on your local council website for deductions made for non dependents.

Check on direct gov website for info on deductions for non dependents.

Trying to get round the law is a dangerous game to play there are big fines for people on benefits who defraud the system - it would affect your parent more than you because they would be the ones defrauding the system.

Honesty is Always the best policy

  2. You would not be liable for any council tax directly yourself however you would be classed as a non-dependent for their Council Tax Benefit claim and a % adjustment would be made to their Council Tax Benefit based on your income.
