Question:

Living in Australia, lost passport and all identification. What do I do?

I've been living in Australia for a little over three weeks now and recently lost my wallet with passport and all government issued id.

I still have a student id with photo, credit cards and copies of my passport, driver's license, birth certificate and all of my visa/school registration info - but no originals.

Will they accept these forms of id at the consulate? Or am I up a creek without a paddle?

  1. If I'm not mistaken, you're asking two questions: 1) What to do about your stuff and 2) Can you use photocopied info to get a replacement?

It sounds like you already have a clear idea of what to do to get your new passport so I'm not going to try and answer the first question, but the second one I'll take a stab at:

According to the consulate web-site (see below) they don't mess around with documentation.  From what I was able to gather, photocopies are not ok.  However, there is not mention on the entire site regarding situations where original documentation is lost or stolen along with the passport (and I can't imagine that you're the first).

Maybe give the consulate a call tomorrow morning before you leave to make sure you won't be wasting your time if they require more extensive information.  And good luck!  That kind of sucks!

  2. As mentioned your only option is to go to the USA consulate and apply for new passports etc...

Good Luck with it, there is nothing worst than losing your important ID and wallet contents - a major hassle.

  3. You better ask in the Australian section, I am Australian but I am not really sure, you will get more responses over there though.

  4. What is your nationality?  You were very wise to make copies of everything.  Go to the nearest embassy or consulate of your home country to get a replacement passport...that is the most important item.  Hopefully they can tell you how to get replacements for the other documents.
