Has anyone from the UK lived in Brazil - did you like it , what were the things you didn't like about it? My wife is Brazillian and we want to settle there but I'm a little unsure - I've spent a lot of time there about 6 months but i'd like to get your views!!

  1. I am not from UK, but I can tell you that Brazil could be a great place to live if you are in a pretty good economic condition. If you plan to live as middle class -at least according to the BR definition of it- please stay in the UK.

Violence could be an issue. Meaning by that that you need to live with it, and once you get used to it that's fine. You need to be low profile, and take care of a couple of details (watch you were, car you drive, etc), unless you drive a armored car with a bodyguard -things I am afraid that you do not want to do-.

Brazilians are great, easy going, nice people, and that makes this place a lot better than many other places in the world. However, the most difficult hurdle for a foreigner to overcome is the cultural shock. First, there is no sense of social responsibility . Second, the cultural codes are absolutely different than those you are used to. From building friendship to committing to a business deal. It is quite easy to gain friends and close deals. However, you might discover later that the level of commitment was not the one you were expecting.

In summary, be prepared. In any case, moving to another country is a major challenge, and it could be really fun. However, I will tend to say that this is not a country to live if you are not making good money, because instead of thinking that you have moved to a tropical paradise you might find out that you are living in a ****-hole.
