  1. Housing is cheap...rents certainly are and property values aren't as inflated as they are in Toronto.

I can only guess that LA being a city where you have to drive everywhere that the roads are kept in good condition...don't expect as much in Montreal.

Having said that,Montreal is a nice place to live and I might want to live there if my French was better or more street signs were in English!

*****Hank, Ontario has more or less the same sort of winter that Quebec gets yet it's roads are infinitely more well kept...you can tell when you cross the border into Ontario because the road is smooth the second you cross the sign. :)   The same stretch of road on St Mary's near St Joseph's has been under repair for 2 years and as of April was STILL not fixed ***

  2. The first things you will notice in Montreal if you are coming from L.A. is all the green and the humidity. Montreal in the summer can get very hot but it is humid also so unlike L.A. is is much greener to look at   at least that's the way I see it.

Montreal is a fabulous place. Very historical in many places and very modern in others. Very bilingual. I went to University there and it is hard to find better schools than McGill, U of M or Concordia. If you are living outside of the town core, there are also very fine high schools both on the Island and just off it. There are several very good hospitals near the core and on the outskirts. I am not sure about housing anymore - it has been a while since I lived there but I am sure someone will come on and know the answers to that.

I hope you enjoy living in my old home town. :o)

  3. Re; Screamag's answer:  Yes, Montreal has roads that are washboards but LA would have too if LA had Montreal's winter weather.  But Montreal has a public bus and subway system that an Angelino can only dream of.  Also, Montreal is a wonderful European-style city, unlike Lala Land.  No real slums or very dangerous neighbourhoods in Montreal.  13.5% salestax on clothing is a bummer but you can avoid it by shopping occasionally in Vermont (and Vermont being nearby is one of the joys of living in Montreal).

  4. I think housing is cheap, but taxes are kind of high. Universities (McGill and Concordia in English) are really good. I don't know about primary or secondary education. Living here is nice, but you'll have to wait for more answers for suggestions on the best places to live as a family, not too far from downtown. Montreal is really nice but don't dismiss other options like Toronto or Vancouver if you are looking for something more American.
