I'm thinking about taking a job in Riverside county CA. It starts around 46k and in 5 years I'll be making about 90k. What kind of life can I have there on that money? I'm single w/ no kids and I plan on staying that way.

  1. Life is what you make of it. Its a community like any other in cali. Save your money by living cheaply and buy property before the market goes back up.  Everything is over priced in cali and the market is depreciating  in cali.

  2. Housing prices are way down. Still, if you're coming from almost anywhere but Hawaii or San Francisco the prices may stun you. Gasoline is about $4.55 a gallon.

At 46k you'll be able to live comfortably. At 90k you'll be able to do a lot.

Riverside County is fairly large. The western end is mostly cities, the eastern part is desert communities such as Palm Springs.

There's not a whole lot to do right in Riverside County, but almost everything is 30-60 minutes away, Disneyland, Hollywood, etc...

If you go to maps.google.com and type in an address for a house you see for sale or an apt. you see for rent, the click on STREET VIEW and you'll be able to look at the front of the house or apt. This is not the satellite view, this is street level, in front of the house.

For example, you could type in the address of the company you'll be working for and look at the building from street view and the neighborhood from satellite view.

  3. The area is the outer suburbs on the west side and desert east.  It also can get quite hot.  You will have to drive a bit for any events   So your big expenses are electricity for air conditioning, apartment / house rental, and gasoline.  I presume you have no problems cooking for yourself and can save money that way.

One thing I am wary of is that it seems interesting that you could find a job that will double its salary in five years.  I would look closely at the offer to see if it is valid.
