Living in Singapore for a Foreign Students?

Question

I am from Indonesia and will go to Singapore for study, is there and tips and trick about living there as a foriegn students?

something that I should bring or not bring?

the amount of monthly living cost for a proper living?

What to have before renting a room?

Opening bank account and having post paid mobile account?

That kind of stuff....help me please....

singapore have most stuff that you can buy quite easily though you might want to bring in your favourite toiletries etc to ease in the environment.

i would say about 400 singapore dollars on a frugal living for food and necessities.

hawker food is between 2 - 3 dollars, plus a drink about 1 dollar. so each meal will cost around 4 dollars. Multiple that by 30 days and you get 4 X 2 meals X 30 = 240 dollars.

transport would likely cost around 100 dollars per month. though I am not sure if you can get student concession rates.

room rental would probably cost around 300 - 400 dollars, depending on the location.  usually owners require two months deposit.  you would likely have to pay additional for electricity and water each month.  good luck to finding a good owner.

you can always open a bank account with 500 dollars or 1000 dollars, depending on the local bank (DBS, POSB, UOB, OCBC, OUB etc).

for mobile, our three main providers are M1, Singtel and Starhub.

Living in Singapore is easy.  Bring something that u think can make you feel safe and especially money.

Daily expenses about S$10 to S$15/- depending whether u used to eat out or need to travel long distance.

Rental is around S$350 to S$400.  It is usual to go through agents to find a good location and something that suits your comfort.  But bring enough to pay for the first month re-fundable downpayment.  Unless you terminate your rental less than a month notice to the landlord, else this one month deposit will be refunded to you upon leaving to another unit.  Be careful to choose the correct tenants.  For renting of rooms, u need not have to bring anything.  The landlord usually prepares some basic things like mattress and cupboards.  Just buy to replenish what not provided.

Getting a line for your mthly paying mobile phone is easy.  Settle down first and then check out the internet for which is providing the best mobile package that suits your needs.  Registration is usually in shops or shopping malls.  I prefer M1 or Singtel cos these two reception is better than Starhub.  

For opening a bank account, all banks in Singapore are providing almost equally good services.  Just a day or a Saturday to visits these banks (usually located near to each other) to find out detail if interest rate is important to you.

Though safe to go around in Singapore, don't go out too late unecessarily.  Travelling is easy by MRT or taxis or buses.  Once you have your student pass, most of the transport will have concession (lesser rate to pay).

Basically Singapore have almost anything you need to study here, just bring enough money, find someone trustworthy, you should able to get all the things you need. The standard of living is relative high, you shall expect about $400 for rental and about $400 for expenses. If you can't find anyone to assist you when you are here, feel free to contact me.

As a student, you will need about $10,000 sing dollars per year to surive in singapore and that is inclusive of rent, food, transport, internet, phone, computers etc etc.

I have known students who have done it for lesser and done it for higher. But $10,000 is a good rule of thumb.
