Living in a caravan for 10/11 months of the year, what is the law?

I am going to be attending lancaster uni in september and my dad came up with a brill idea instead of renting. His idea was to buy a cheap caravan, put it on a caravan site which opens 10/11 months of the year and come home for two months so i cannot claim it to be full time residence.

After doing my homework, non of the caravan parks seem to let you do this?

Does any body know of any sites that do this? or is this a law that you can only spent a certain amount of time in the caravan rather than living there?

Thankyou

  1. I know a lot of retired people do this, but you usually need to buy the caravan from the site (they usually try to call it a log cabin or something like that - sounds more up-market than caravan) and if you try to sell there are loads of conditions which usually mean you end up losing loads of money. Personaly I think it would be very cold to live in a caravan over the winter months. You will meet more people and feel more a part of life at uni if you rent with or near other students

  2. No your not allowed some kinda by-law thingy. (See ref below).

Sorry but it won't work, becuase the government will think that you are trying to avoid paying your polling taxes etc.

  3. There are basically three types of caravan parks.

    1. Residential, which allow all-year occupation

    2. Holiday, which allow occupation for part of the year

    3. Touring, which caters only for touring caravans.

A given site can incorporate more than one of these types.

But sites are licensed by the local council and policies vary area to area. For example in most of Ayrshire, the holiday sites are only permitted to be occupied for nine months of the year.

I suggest that you need to do a lot more research into individual caravan parks. It might be worthwhile spending a day or two in the area looking at a variety of sites. Also try looking further afield. Have you looked at Morecambe? or Carnforth? or Fleetwood? even Preston?
