  1. Ah, I'm so excited for you!! The family that hosted me was AMAZING. They picked me up from the train station, took me to their house, and were not offended when I slept off the jet lag for 16 hours straight. I can't speak for everyone, obviously, but my family was great. Every meal was home-cooked, they did our laundry and did not try to control our lives. If they take you out for coffee or a meal, they will want to pay, so the best thing is to ask them to coffee or a meal later, and treat (don't forget this is the custom there--you invite, you pay). You are going to have such an amazing time--good luck, and try/do everything that is possible, no matter the cost! Suerte!

  2. You should expect to become a member of that family!

Hopefully, the organization you are participating with has prepared you for NOT being a guest! And they have told your host family the same thing! You will participate in everything that they do for the entire time you are there -- from shopping to household chores!

Don't be afraid to talk to them and tell them your difficulties -- they are there to help you! But don't forget to tell them the good things too! That's important for them to hear.

As soon as you get information on your family, take the time to get to know them. Correspond by e-mail, letter, MSN, maybe even phone calls! I've hosted 13 times now, and since e-mail has become common have used it to get to know my kids! You can tell them your likes and dislikes, and they can do the same for you.

But, the big thing to remember, they are your FAMILY. Make sure you ask your host parents at the very beginning (maybe even before you arrive) what they want you to call them! Make sure you volunteer to help out (especially if they did not assign you any specific chores). Clean up after yourself! Be friendly. Tell about YOUR family back home, YOUR school, etc. They are hosting you to learn as well!
