Living in paris, how much a month?

im gonna take a 6 month course in paris, and i really need to know how much i might spend a month, doing it really cheap, renting a cheap room, traveling in bus and eating at home.

wow, sounds fun!  Is it at AF?  I took classes there before - it's a very cool school.  

I guess it depends on where you live.  It would be nice to be close to your school but that might not be possible.  You can find pretty cheap rooms.

So, here what I did:

I did a search on pap, vendrealouer, cl, fusac and found an average price of 200 a month for a room inside Paris.  For apartments (furnished) the average price was 650 (studio).  For unfurnished average of 450.  But this is average.  

It took me almost 3 months to find a place so you should start looking right now.  Best to actually find someone here that can help you.  I'd suggest calling an apartment rental person (immobilier) or if you know someone.

Also, the school you're going to will have some great contacts.  At AF they have a great exchange board for finding apartments, rooms...  so does Sorbonne and the catholic language school.

Food can be cheap if you cook at home since prices for food (produce, etc.) is much cheaper than the U.S. or UK.

I'd estimate you'd need (but you'd need to really scrimp):

200 for the room (not the best place of course)

200 for food

50 for metro/bus

200 for misc.

So, about 650 or 700 a month should be doable.

Of course you could get cheaper by staying in a "hotel particulier" or hostel!

I suggest you look here http://www.fusac.fr/en/annonces_categori... to get a realistic view of what is available in rooms for rent and what it will cost. Housing costs in Paris are on par with New York City although cheaper than London.

A Carte Orange Mensuel, a monthly trasport pass for zones 1 and 2 will cost you 53.50 euros.

Food in France is somewhat more expensive than in the United States. Expect to pay  10-12 euros for a kilo (about $6.25 per pound) of ground beef for example.

On a positive note, I'd just like to reiterate what Rillifane said: FUSAC is an invaluable resource for English-speakers in Paris. I'd also recommend, once you're actually in Paris, checking out the bulletin board at the American Cathedral. Their contact info is:

On a not-so-positive note: It's refreshing to know that there are people like you in this world, because if everyone took it upon themselves to bash cultures they know nothing about, reveling in their own ignorance, neuroses, and intellectual laziness in the process, things would be very bleak indeed. (I think you'll be able to figure out who I'm alluding to here.)

But let's not end with that: if you can deal with living in neighborhoods that are not glamorous or chic in any discernible way whatsoever, you might consider the Barbès-Rochechouart section of the 18ème arrondissement, or pretty much any part of the 19ème. Not dangerous, but mostly working class, large immigrant population, etc. Lots of affordable housing there. I used to live in Marcadet-Poissonniers, not far from Barbès.

I'd say :

¤ 400-500€ for a room

¤ 40-60€ for bus and métro

¤ 200€ for shopping

Paris is very expensive.
